Built to spill

Today will fall beneath the weight of next day

So i'm home. so call me. i'm bored

So i ranted alot about my thoughts on music, but i never really clarified.

I say christian music sucks for two reasons.

1. Its not art, its imitation. (although P.O.D. may be the only exception, but non-christian don't consider them christian anyway)

2. It has no practical use. For me personally, it has no evangelical use, it teaches me nothing productive about music, although it does fuel my frustration with non-cultured christians.

The following is a list of songs i've been listening to that are beautiful.

Crying - Roy Orbison
Crazy - Patsy Cline
Moving on up - Primal Scream
In the morning - Built to spill
Cult of Personality - Living Color
Waterloo Sunset - Kinks (seriously listen to this one, amazing)
Terrible Lie - Nine Inch Nails
I Just Know - Disciple
Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
Come Together - Primal Scream
Surfin With The Alien - Joe Satriani
Under A Glass Moon -Dream Theater

I too have problems with so called "Christian" music.

What makes music "Christian"? Does a band/musician become categorized as "Christian" if the lyrics are "Christian"? Or does the music become categorized as "Christian" if the band/musicians are "Christian"?

It's kind of tricky. I have a buddy who was the front man of a local band (now broken up). I think it would be fair to say that 4 of the 5 members were/are "Christian". They were ocasionally called a "Christian" band but my buddy was quick to correct people, saying that they weren't a "Christian" band (even though they were made up of 4/5 "Christian" members). Why would he say that? It's possible that if they were pursuing lives as rock stars they didn't want to obtain a recording contract with a "Christian" label. Because the "Christian" music scene isn't as big as the "non-Christian" music scene. I don't know.

Here's a thought. Why is it necessary to label oneself as a "Christian" band?

Why would it be necessary to label oneself as "Christian" anything? I know of someone who recently changed dentists. This person is seemingly thrilled that their new dentist is "Christian". As if being a "Christian" makes their work as a dentist better than any other dentist.

I think there's a problem with cutting oursleves off from "the real world" by creating this "Christian" subculture.

No wonder people think "Christians" are messed up.

Christian music gives kids an opportunity to actually listen to more positive music. Music has a bigger effect on us than we realize. It may even be a good thing if it "imitates" mainstream music, because then it has the same sound as stuff their friends are listening to.
